I used chat GPT to go through my option given what I needed in a portable DVD player with a minimum 12″ screen, and this Oakcastle DVD175 came up and I have heard of the brand too. I also use cash and this was available at Argos. 15 minutes late, I had bought one.
The first thing I noticed was how very light this is, which is perfect as I will be using it in the motorhome too.
Setting up ……. An absolute doddle and very quick and I hate tech, this is very good.
Using …….. Again another surprise how easy this is to use. Pop the DVD in and switch on and the simplest menu pops up. In seconds I was playing my first DVD ‘American Graffiti’, yes, I’m stuck in the past era of Rock n Roll … The only thing I struggled with was the remote has very small buttons close together and it would have been nice to have the volume buttons in the usual place. However, muscle memory overcame that quickly. The swivel tilting screen is an absolute gem.
Picture ….. For what it is, it is very good for a TFT screen and this price, no complaints. I have now watched several films on early nights with zero eye strain, this is a good sized screen. The quality is surprisingly good too.
Sound….. It’s plenty loud enough for a bedroom and the sound itself is okay. I plugged my Majority Snowdon sound bar in and woof, it like being in the cinema and you soon forget this unit is smaller than your television. Even without the soundbar, the sound is quite good, but the soundbar does spoil you.
Overall impression …….. For £114.99, this is amazing and will play any DVD or CD from anywhere. You will be surprised just how good this unit really is and I’m glad I bought this and not a smaller screen. Being so light it’s easy to take with you (mine is in a computer bag).
Battery life …… Not fully tested, but so far I’ve had 4 hours from this from a full charge and then went to sleep. So, I know this has a good battery life of at least 4 hours plus.
Niggles ….. This is nit picking but not a big issue. The on off power button is right next to the power lead. It would have been better elsewhere away from the lead, maybe on top. I couldn’t find the power light. I saw a video on YouTube and the light is inside behind a little grille. Bend down so your eyes are level with the front base, and it’s on the right. At night it shines directly at you, but you can swivel the base round a bit – solved.
Conclusion. great unit, good quality and I’m buying two more as Christmas presents …
