The short verdict? This excellent compact, versatile CD player has exceeded my expectations with a hint of pleasant nostalgia thrown in too!
I was on the hunt for an inexpensive CD player for the car, and the garden as I have several hundred CD’s and I still enjoy the physicality of listening to an “album” as originally released by the artists. When I opened the box, I did have a little flashback to my original CD Walkman from many moons ago but the Oakcastle 100 has so many advantages over the older technology.
Firstly, this slim CD player is so light that it is no trouble at all to carry anywhere – mine fits snuggly in the front of my car under the Sat Nav. The CD100 has built in Anti-Shock Protection so despite the best attempts of various speed bumps and crumbling roads, not once has a CD skipped on me in the car.
I can use the player via either Bluetooth or the auxiliary cable that comes in the box, which connects, simply to the car audio system. This allows volume control from the steering wheel, which is a handy bonus I had not foreseen.
My biggest surprise was the high quality of sound from such a small CD player. It has a crisp, vibrant sound and even the luxury of 5 fixed sound equaliser settings. I found the rock setting allows me to enjoy the subtleties of a variety of my favourite CDs, from Nick Drake to New Model Army!
The controls are intuitive, easy to use and the CD100 even boasts a clear LCD display on the lid, which all go to make this a pretty much a plug in and play device.
The charge lasts for several hours – managed to get from Edinburgh to Manchester and back without any need to charge – and the charger comes in the box along with earphones.
In summary, this little CD player excels at what it’s designed for – to bring those dust gathering CD’s back to life with great sound, in a user friendly and portable way. I seriously doubt that I could find anything as good as this for the £35 I paid for it.
